For the summer and autumn 2000 five day tours were arranged starting in May and continuing to October 2000. These trips are not normally open to non-members but friends of members may accompany them (if space is available) on payment of a supplement of £1 on the standard charge.

All day excursions leave North Hanover Street opposite Queen Street Station at the times stated. Stops are made for tea/coffee but some members prefer to bring their own snacks and refreshments.

We do not reserve specific seats on the coaches nor do we issue tickets. It is customary to leave the two seats immediately behind the driver for the use of the excursion leader. Members should bring their N.T.S. membership cards on all excursions and wear suitable footwear and clothing.

Saturday 20 May 2000. Depart 9.00 am

Floors Castle and Peebles
This day tour takes us to visit Floors Castle the border home of the Duke and Duchess of Roxburghe which is the largest inhabited castle in Scotland. Designed by William Adam building work started in 1721. Lunch will be taken in Kelso and a tea stop will be made in the town of Peebles.

Braemar Castle
We go north to Royal Deeside and the turreted castle at Braemar, now owned by Captain Farquharson of Invercauld. Built for the Earl of Mar in 1628 and rebuilt in 1748 when it was used as a garrison for Hanoverian troops.
The village of Braemar will be our lunch stop. We will return there after the visit to the castle when there will be the opportunity for shopping and to have tea.

Glamis Castle and House of Pitmuies Garden
We will visit Glamis Castle, the home of the Earl and Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne. It is especially appropriate to visit the childhood home of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in her centenary year. The castle is the legendary setting for Shakespeare's "Macbeth".
We go in to visit one of the finest small private gardens in Great Britain, at Mrs Ogilvie's House of Pitmuies where a full afternoon tea will be served in her restored drawing room.

Saturday 12 August 2000 Depart 8.45 am

Dalswinton & Charles Jenck's Garden (Dumfries)
We are privileged to visit two properties that are not normally open to the public.
Dalswinton is the country house of Sir David Landale, who is a former owner of the beautiful island of Gigha, and the gardens of Achamore House. Dalswinton was built between 1780 and 1785 by Patrick Millar and altered in 1919. Sir David will show us over his house which is near Dumfries. Lunch will be available at the nearby Auldgirth Inn. In the afternoon we will visit the unusual physic garden designed by the garden architect Charles Jencks.

Saturday 7 October 2000 Depart 9.00 am
Cost £15.00 (includes tea)
New Lanark & Sorn Castle
We visit New Lanark and see the village exhibits illustrating the change in society which centred around the industrial revolution. The Falls of Clyde are also nearby. Later we go on to Sorn Castle in Ayrshire, again the private home of Mrs Rachel McIntyre, and not normally open to the public. The house is a very fine example of Edwardian "Lorimeresque" architecture. Mrs McIntyre will show us over her house and we will enjoy a full afternoon tea in the dining room before we depart.
