For the summer and autumn 2006 five day tours have been arranged starting in May and continuing to October. These trips are not normally open to non-members but friends of members may accompany them when space was available on payment of a supplement to the normal members' charge.


1. Crarae Garden and Inverary

Saturday 13th May 2006. Depart 09:15, return 18:30 approximately, cost £18.

Crarae was gifted to the Trust in 2002 by the Crarae garden Charitable Trust following a successful public appeal for £1.5m. The garden was started in 1912 and is noted for its collection of woodland plants and exotic trees.
After leaving Glasgow a stop will be made for coffee at Helensburgh after which we will travel on to Inverary where there will be free time for lunch. In the afternoon we will visit Crarae returning to Inverary where there will be time for tea / shopping before we return to Glasgow.

2. Hill of Tarvit and Kinross House

Thursday 15th June 2006. Depart 09:00, return 18:30 approximately, cost £24

Hill of Tarvit mansion House owned by the Trust was remodelled in 1906 by the celebrated architect Sir Robert Lorimer. It is noted for its collection of French and Chippendale style furniture, porcelain and paintings. A stop for coffee will be made en route.
Arrangements have been made for the property to be opened, specially for our group, on arrival at 11:30 approximately. A light lunch will be available in the tea room.
In the afternoon we will drive the short distance to Kinross House which has been the family home of the Montgomery family for many generations. Kinross House was built by Sir William Bruce in the late 17th century in the Palladian style for his own residence. We will have a guided tour of the house and gardens. Afternoon tea will be provided and is included in the cost.

3. Angus Folk Museum and Kirriemuir

Saturday 8th July 2006. Depart 08:45, return 18:30 approximately, cost £20.

We will spend the day in Angus visiting three N.T.S. properties. In the morning, after a coffee stop en route we will visit the Angus Folk Museum at Glamis. The museum provides a fascinating insight into rural life in the area over the past two hundred years.
Afterwards we will continue to Kirriemuir where there will be free time for lunch. In the afternoon we visit the birthplace of Sir J M Barrie at 9 Brechin Road and the adjacent museum dedicated to Barrie's life which also houses important theatrical memorabilia. Subject to satisfactory weather conditions we will also visit the camera Obscura on Kirrie Hill. The camera Obscura was given to the community of Kirriemuir, by J M Barrie, after he received the freedom of the town in 1930. It is managed by the Trust. Tea will be provided at Barries' Birthplace and is included in the cost.

4. Museum of Flight (Concorde) and Newhailes

Saturday 12th August 2006. Depart 08:45, return 18:30 approximately, cost £22.

We will travel directly to the Museum of Flight at East Fortune where we will have a "flight" on Concorde. refreshments are available at the tea room nearby. After this we will have free time at Dobbies garden centre, Loanhead, for lunch and shopping followed by Newhailes in the afternoon.
Newhailes, the former home of the Dalrymple family was acquired by the Trust in 1997 and has been conserved rather than restored to preserve its original interiors and furnishings. There is a cafe where refreshments can be obtained.

5. Culzean and Blairquhan

Saturday 14th October 2006. Depart 09:00, return 18:30 approximately, cost £24.

We will travel directly to Culzean Castle where there will be free time for lunch and visiting the castle and environs. In the afternoon we visit Blairquhan, the home of Patrick Hunter Blair. Blairquhan was built about 1820 in the Scottish baronial style, the architect being William Burn. It has a valuable collection of Trotter furniture. We hope to have a guided tour. Afternoon tea will be provided and is included in the cost.

Town Visit, David Livingstone Centre and Chatelherault

Wednesday 30th August 2006. Depart 11:00, return 17:00 approximately, cost £15.

We will travel directly to the Centre where we will have lunch. There will be plenty of time to visit the Museum which incorporates David Livingstone's birthplace and which shows his extraordinary achievements. On 16 November 1855 David Livingstone renamed the stupendous cataract on the Zambesi river "The Victoria Falls" in honour of Queen Victoria.
Chatleherault was built 250 years ago as the hunting lodge and summer house for the Dukes of Hamilton. It was designed by William Adam as a distinctive "eyecatcher" completing the Grand Avenue of trees which ran north from Hamilton palace. tea will be available in the Visitors' Centre.

Five day Touring Holiday to Norfolk

Friday 8th to Tuesday 12th September 2006.

Cost £320 sharing a twin room or £340 for a single room. The cost includes insurance, driver's gratuity and admission to non NT properties.

We will stay for four nights, on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis at the Quality Hotel, Norwich which is situated four miles from the city centre. All bedrooms are ensuite and equipped with the usual facilities.

Visits are planned to Sandringham House, Holkham Hall and two national Trust properties: Blickling Hall and Oxburgh Hall. We will also visit Bressays Lavender farm and have free time in Norwich.

We have again, this year, been able to obtain a large number of single rooms. As demand usually exceeds our allocation some members may wish to consider sharing a twin-bedded room.

The closing date for applications was 25th March. Places may be available if there are cancellations.
